"John McDonald"

I met John McDonald in the Scottish Highland Village in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. John, the Village blacksmith, kindly agreed to pose for this photo after we chatted about work, music, and life for a half hour. As we spoke, the fog crept up around the church.

"Scarecrow Joe Mows"

Somewhere along the west coast of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia exists a 2-acre lot full of scarecrows attending weddings, dancing, playing, and even mowing the lawn. "Scarecrow Joe's" is a year-round haven to more than 50 very happy and unusual scarecrows.

Makeshift Swing

When flooding occurred throughout California during the 2004 rainy season, residents of Ventura found creative ways to use the wood and other debris that littered the coast. This whimsical swing was just one example.

Irish Pride

In Ireland, many businesses perform double, often unrelated, duties as is the case with the bread company Irish Pride. I snapped this photo in Connemara, just as this man hopped out of the truck to deliver newspapers.

Accordionist on Grafton

Buskers (street musicians) such as this accordionist are very popular fixtures on Grafton Street in Dublin, Ireland. This one looks Italian, but he had an Irish accent to match the traditional Irish music he performed.
